Your goal should be to hire highly competent people and not just adequate ones. An enthusiastic and highly competent employee is worth two to three “average” employees.
You should also consider structuring your salary/wage scale (if you can) to reflect this. An excellent employee with an enthusiastic, “can do” attitude should get paid more than an average employee.
Imagine where your company could grow if your workforce consisted of skilled, highly motivated employees. Then, your biggest problem would be coping with phenomenal success. But that’s a good problem to have.
Oh, and when you fill your company with highly successful employees, don’t fall into the trap of “the bell curve”. You have gone and filled your company with above average people. In that sampling, some of them will be below average, some above average, and some well-above average. But, don’t lose sight of the fact that they are all above average compared to the rest of the world (and, hopefully, your competitors.) Treat them accordingly.
And remember, it all starts with the hiring process–looking for the best and hiring the best.
